Be the jungle, dude!

Yes, I know… I don’t write since March… maybe when my last job began. Well, it’s the life of Marketing Managers… they are going to save a business like a hero, and when they are out, they have superhero complex… Nobody really cares about us.

But that’s not my business now. No. I am a rockstar, I have a big ego to deal with other bigger egos in the industry: show must go on! And the best way for this “big hero rockstar” is keeping on the business by my own… Have just you seen how I sold myself? Well, it’s only a proof of how I can promote talent!

Yes, my big ego is still writing 😉

So, B-side my joB was born as the “behind the scene” of Patricia Cano… But now, this blog is the seed of my Press & Marketing Agency in audiovisual productions, animation and VFX studios, videogames, technology and music. Voilà!

My last 15 years I have been Journalist, Photographer (PíCaRa), Editor, Marketing Manager and Audiovisual Production Teacher. All of them are my A-side. for different companys. But I am very tired of this side… so, how to survive in a jungle? Be the jungle! Enjoy the jungle, all the projects I can promote are there! So, here I am, me and my B-side.

How PROMOTE animated feature films, VFX jobs, videogames, concerts, artists… and not to take more than three painkillers a day ? Well… maybe I can get to take only one!… that’s my B-side, and I’m going to tell you in this blog how really this mad business is.

But, if you need marketing and press services to survive in this crazy business, better write right now to Come on! Marketing is only rock’n roll… but I like it!

Oh yes, I am a woman, but don’t scare yourself, it’s not ‘Mad Men’ epoch anymore… only ‘Mad Professionals’ for this crazy business, dude!

#Feminism: the new black

#8M is coming: International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world and, first time in Spain, women will be able to be on strike! But, what does it have to do with marketing?

Well, nowadays, the Feminism is the new black: a worldwide movement in any social class and that’s integrated in any marketing campaign. But the big question is: What solutions are there? Well… we can ask for them to the President of the Spanish Government:

Translation TC 00:35′: Question “Not even saying that if a woman and a man do the same, should they earn the same salary?” Answer “Let’s not get involved in that”.

Great, right? Well… Government campaigns supporting women rights are part of “The hypodermic needle model” (an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver without any question). It was explained too -with other theory- by Daniel Kahneman, Nobel in economic science, in his book ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’.

So the Government is supporting our rights and fighting for equality and same salaries between men and women… but in fact, it’s not that way. This kind of promotion is an indulged lie to get votes… not to get rights… Well, my sweet Alice in Wonderland, it’s a marketing campaign where the objetives are differents than you thought… only that.

How can we fight against this corruption of feminism? We have to see beyond the marketing… what is being achieved? Maybe the strike, where women are temporarily giving up to their daily salary, can achieve more than advertisement. “Feminism is like sexism”, “you cannot wear neckline and defend your rights”, “if you are a man you can’t be a feminist … all of that are just strategies to lure you away from the real objective of feminism campaign: equality.

Keep it on your mind! Anything that moves away from equality, is not a marketing campaign about Feminism … it’s only a tool to achieve other objectives … A company can sell more products and make women have more visibility and equal salaries in the same marketing campaign. The objectives: selling more and get an equal society. It’s not bad!

What other invisible marketing campaigns can help achieve equal rights for women?

There are websites like Wisel Wisel -where everybody enjoy memes and jokes- and from time to time there are sexy photos of tattoos and girls under the hashtag #RockGirl… perfect! And what about #RockBoys? I like women body, I like tattoos, and definitely I also like men bodies (not only women, a lot of men will be also agree me).

Another example: Formula 1 was criticized for using models (women) as stewardesses, so they fired them. Wrong! If hostesses are necessary, hire women and men for it! They can be models or not. The problem is this (the real objetive, remember):

And, of course, there are another taboo issues, like asking women about maternity in job interviews or the believe that women can’t consume porn or that porn can only be focused in men pleasure. There are women film directors -like Erika Lust– and even websites that offer this kind of videos without hurting women and, most important of all, they are able to evoke pleasurable situations for men and women. The danger of “traditional” porn is their evocation of violent situations against women. Women enjoy sex too, believe me…

By the way, even in LGTBI community, women have to fight more for their rights... and quite often marketing campaigns forget about it!

It’s very shocking to see how a lot of friends (men friends) change their mind when they have daughters… Don’t wait for this moment and begin to find equality everywhere! It has to be part of your Personal brand in life!!

And yes, only for this time, forget what I said in my first presentation, because in this B-side article , the product placement is not only in your imagination…

Be feminist, my friend!

Personal brand rules your CV

I know, I know… my B-side is not exactly Human Resources… but voila!… sometimes, the ways of the destiny are unbelievable! And this B-side will be your A-side…

So, one day, “the girl of the T-shirts” (you can understand my nickname reading my first post) has to help producers to achieve the best team… with the best of the communications ways…. and even has to make personal interviews to the candidates. Well, if I had to give a title, it would be: make your personal brand rules your CV! And do it right now!

FIRST OF ALL… Although it seems obvious, stand out in a visible way the position / candidature to which you are applying for. Yes, recruiters have no time to guess what do you want to be in your life… My first CV was like it: “dear recruiter, what can I do?: Everything, of course!!”… then, nobody called me….

Extra knowledge is welcome, but the spotlight has to be your speciality. By the way, here you have some exercises to value your objetives in life, it’s free and the hapiness is before anything: The Wheel of Life test

Well… how your CV has to look like… I would say, be yourself like it was a reflection of your soul… lovely! But not! Please, be yourself but in the way you think a hundred thousand times before doing anything! Don’t occupy more than one page (trees have to survive…) and try to save your PDF archive in an editable way, not as an image… (yes, sometimes I make copy/paste…)

The innovative CV designs show creativity and initiative but … beware of making reading difficult!

Ok, now a clasiccal and silly error.… If you don’t put the province or the country, there are addresses that can be the same in Spain as in Mexico…and, please, chronological order always! From the most current job…and put the dates!

Well, if you have done everything I have just mencioned, it will be a great step for the World! giphy3

But it’s not enough! If you want to work at audiovisual area, videogames or animation feature films, among others, don’t let a shot ruins your Reel! Discard WIP jobs and select the best: less is more! And, please, record it on your mind: Send links that don’t expire and run away from ZIP archives… Better send Vimeo links with or without a password! Or a Dropbox link, please!

Don’t forget indicate in the e-mail subject what is the candidature you are applying for, and to demostrate some human qualities, include a brief presentation or cover letter. But, please, not being too formal doesn’t mean you write too colloquial.

Yes, talk about featured movies / videogames / companies you have been working, and what softwares you’re specialized in … but be brief, please!

And I can’t forget the typical question… photo… yes or not? Well… from my point of view, nowadays, we live in social media … So if you don’t insert your photo, I ask myself… what’s wrong with you? Because I will find you on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and I will see the portrait that you don’t want I see… I promise.. XD.

How to know what is the best pic… Well, nothing better that my own B-side. One day I chose this profile photo:

Yes… I know! It was the pic with more likes on Facebook 😉 … And the best comment of all: “What a pretty girl! It doesn’t look like you!” … Thanks mum…

But one day I had a revelation: I didn’t trust on that girl of my own profile... she has half face behind her hair… the chin high, arrogant look… maybe for Tindle, Whatsapp or Instagram is perfect but… I don’t have that face when talk to people at work... Then… like photographer I am, I began to make me selfies with my professional camera.. natural light and flash…and after hundred pics… here we have my true Patricia!

Yes, you can see my two eyes, natural smile, style and expression! Tattoo, piercing… are not a problem! All that is me! Then… What did my mum say??: “What a pretty girl! It doesn’t look like you!”… (Mothers!!!)

Your personal brand is your best presentation card so, althought you have to take in care these things, be natural and show what you can do for the company. You will give the best of you working, so begin giving the best of you with the CV.

All my admiration for people who work in Human Resources with the big responsability of contract the best people to the company and not let value people run away. Recently, I saw a spanish forum on LinkedIn to improve the Human Resources and make it can be more “human”. Answering to every candidate explaining about why he/she is not elegible and how improve their CV are some of the tips of the “decalogue” they are preparing. What important is the communication in all the bussiness areas!!! I desire it can be real!

Some Human Resources tips for 2018 (spanish article)

Upps! Don’t forget that LinkedIn is a professional social media, so choose the correct contacts of you labour area, because it improves the probability of appearing in the search of the recruiters. And share news about your job and articles of the sector…

An that’s all!

This B-side article has been about how to improve your A-side, so… don’t ruin it, my friend!

Why B-Side my friend?

B-side my joB is the “behind the scene” of Patricia Cano.

Journalist, Photographer (PíCaRa) and Marketing Manager. All of them are my A-side.

That, my friend, is my B-side, and I am going to tell you how really is this CRAZY business…

Yes, it will always be in English language… MY English language… So take it easy… and read me with Sofía Vergara accent in ‘Modern Family’. It will be more funny if you forgive my mistakes… no cat will die 😉

First at all…. a short and graphic introduction to the great job of “The girl of the Marketing”…. aka “the girl of the T-shirts”.*

This is what you have to promote… (what bosses say):

Well… it’s only the begining… And don’t forget it, the product placement in this B-side is just your imagination.

This blog will be awesome! (yes… it is what I want to promote… XD)

Because Marketing is only rock’n roll… and I like it!
